How to Peel a Large amount of Garlic Fast and Easy
Have you struggled to find the best and fastest way to peel garlic, especially when it’s canning season and the cucumbers are ready to pickle and the spaghetti sauce roasted?
I know I did!
The daunting task of peeling enough garlic for large batches, is enough to make you put off the canning project altogether!
If you’re lucky, you have a helper to help with the garlic peeling job, but if not…sigh…
I persevered my way through the task for several years with the kids helping me as much as they could, and then by accident I discovered a simple way to make the peeling go so much easier!
I honestly can’t remember how I came up with it…but it’s a winner!
For a visual demo, watch the video below, or continue on for written instructions.
We grow a lot of garlic every year and use it not only for pickles and spaghetti sauce, but I also dehydrate a lot of it to make my own garlic powder, which I use in many of my regular dishes.
We also encapsulate the powder to be taken as a supplement if raw garlic isn’t a good option for taking daily, or too spicy for some of the family or we’ve used the raw stuff all up and need to take garlic in some way, shape or form.
When I say that I peel a lot at a time, I really do mean a lot. Like pounds and pounds of it!
With our family of 8, we put up enormous amounts of garlic each and every canning season.
So…How do I peel a lot of garlic fast and easy?
- Break the garlic bulbs apart and put several handfuls of cloves into a bowl.
- Cover with hot water and let soak for 5-10 minutes.
- Peel!
- Rinse off the cloves.
The kids actually love helping with this, because they get to fish around in the water and find the cloves and they are able to peel them easily as well.
You can do as large a batch as you would like to at a time. I just try to do only as much as I think I can peel in one session.
After the cloves have soaked, it’s kind of fun to take the skins off so easily!
All you have to do when you are done, is to rinse off the peeled cloves and voila! You have as much as you need without putting as much effort into it as you used to!

I have many ways that I love to use the garlic that we grow.
To use it fresh, my favorite tool is this garlic twist, which I just LOVE using!!

For encapsulating the powder, I use a simple manual tool that came from Azure Standard and buy the capsules in bulk.
To dehydrate the garlic, I chop it in my Cuisinart food processor and spread it out on the dehydrator screens.
This is the large dehydrator that we’ve used for years and just LOVE!!
We’ve made everything from various dried fruits, to fruit leather, to dried egg noodles in it. It is on the spendy side, but if you do a lot of dehydrating, it is a great tool to have on hand!
A word of warning though, do not dehydrate the garlic in your living space or kitchen, because it sends out a very heady and strong smell that gave us headaches.
I mistakenly thought that smelling it while it was drying would be very good for our immune systems and we quickly discovered that it wasn’t a good idea.
So we always dry it somewhere where we can close a door on it, either in the utility or the basement.
In conclusion, these are the many ways we use our abundant garlic harvest every year and having a fast and easy way to peel large amounts with less effort, makes it so much easier!
I’d love to hear about your favorite ways to use garlic and whether you have tried this method or planning on trying it soon! Happy Peeling!
